Very Early Radiohead Demos Surface!

Before Radiohead was Radiohead, they we're On A Friday and very recently two very early demos have surfaced on the At Ease Message Boards. I havent yet had the opportunity to hear the second demo but I was able to get ahold of the three tracks from the first surfaced demo. I went into these songs expecting something very rough and unfinished and while they may not sound so much like Radiohead of today, they are certainly good songs. Get these quick, as I'm not sure how long I'll keep them up.

[MP3]: On A Friday :: Happy Song
[MP3]: On A Friday :: Sinking Ship
[MP3]: On A Friday :: To Be A Brilliant Light

I must say, I quite enjoy all three of them and oddly enough, "Happy Song" is actually very happy, indeed. If i can get my hands on the other demo I'll get it as soon as I can.

Boo Hoo Hoo Boo

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

They Shoot Horses Don't They? is a peculiar group. In fact, last time I posted about them, most of you found them to be a bit too peculiar. But I'm here to tell you, they're so much more than what some of you may think. Boo Hoo Hoo Boo, their new album due out in February on Kill Rock Stars, is full out outrageous group vocals, crazy circus-pop melodies, and more swirling horn creshendos than you could shake a stick at. Take a listen to these new songs and let me know what you think.

[MP3]: Concussion
At first this song seems like it might be boring. It starts out with a circus-like keyboard drone with slow simple lyrics over it, but then at about 2:30 the bands three piece horn section comes in and takes over the song and begins the rousing march that rides out the rest of the song. Wonderful.

[MP3]: Lowlife
Just try to get the showtunes horn line from this song out of your head, go ahead and try. In short, I love this song.

Finian McKean

Chris did a little post on this guy a little while back and I really liked it and planned to do a small post as well. But, as per the holidays and such it got pushed into the back of my head. Well I got an email yesterday from Mr. McKean himself that obviously jogged my memory, so here it is.

Finian McKean was a member of the late 90's indie band The Push Kings, whom until now, I was completely unfamilar with. Regardless, the music he's making now is really great. He just released his new solo album, Shades Are Drawn. It's eerie, country tinged folk, but with enough rock to make it really quite accesible. This desciption is only based on the two songs I've heard, but check them out see for yourself.

I really, really, really love this song by The Very Hush Hush. However, I know nothing at all about them and their website is pretty confusing.

The Vells

An overwhelming trend here lately has been "Wintery" bands, incase you haven't noticed. Well in the spirit of it STILL being freezing outside( i even slid on some ice coming into work) here's yet another band that i find to be synonomous with Winter.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

The Vells make dusty psychedelic pop that can be equally haunting and uplifting from one song to the next. They manage to make their lo-fi sound overly lush and full of depth both musically and lyrically. Singer Tristan Marcum is not only a amazing vocalist but he also happens to be and unbelievably talented lyricist, spinning lines like, "Down some the lovey laces / 'Round in a devey daze/ Sound out the holy stasis / Of languid lays" on "In the Hours of Flowers." Complementing Marcum is the fluid rhythm section of Jeremiah Green(Modest Mouse) on drums and Adam Hewrey on bass. Mary Thinnes also adds vocals as well as the keyboard and organ lines that hold almost all of their songs together.

They released their outstanding debut full length Flight From Echo Falls on Imputor? back in September of 2004 and are set to release a new album tentatively titled Integretron this coming June. But for now listen to these and add them to your Winter soundtrack.

Samara Lubelski

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Ever notice how the weather can determine how particular music will affect you? Well "Winter" music is my favorite, I broke out Funeral a few weeks ago and it's now in heavy, heavy rotation. There's just something about that album that just screams "snow! freezing temperatures! darkness!" Well, this Winter I've been enjoying music with a lot of atmosphere and beauty (See previous post on Jeniferever) and Samara Lubelski couldn't fit into that category more perfectly.

Samara makes music for lonely winter days, psychedelic infused folk pop oozing with beautiful melodies and warm breathy vocals. "Samara blends the seasoned performer with her intimate material. Her compositions are enmeshed within an aural cocoon comprised not only by her previous work but also by engineering the material herself. An experience that will envelop you in its beauty." - The Social Registry

Jeniferever

What do you get when you take Cat Power, Bjork, Low and Mogwai and throw them in a blender? You get a bloody mess, of course. But, if the this was in fact a metaphorical blender, than i think you would get a nice Jeniferever smoothie.

Gosh. That was really lame. Listen to these songs though and it makes perfect sense, i swear.

Suburban Sprawl Holiday Compilation!

Tis the season for giving and boy does Suburban Sprawl Music totally understand this concept! Every year since 2003 they have released free holiday compilations featuring brand new holiday songs from bands on the label and all around Chicago. I haven't made it through all of them yet, but these are a few of my favorites...

Ester Drang

EXAMS ARE OVER! HURRAY! Today I celebrated by doing, well, nothing at all except watching Christmas movies. I'm a big Christmas junkie if you hadn't already figured that out. But when I did manage to get up and do something productive I found my way to a song by a band called Ester Drang.

Ester Drang is a four piece from Oklahoma that recently signed to Jade Tree Records. The will be releasing their 3rd full-lenght, Rocinate, via Jade Tree on January 24th.

Though their website lists several prominent influences from My Bloody Valentine to Phillip Glass to the Beatles and back to Mogwai, they aren't stepping on any toes. They've got their very own unique sound that comes from being together almost 10 years, and you'll understand why they list those influences after you hear this song.

Wow! This has been a great day for Christmas Songs!

Here is Christmas jam from The Walkmen as well. This single came out last year but It's new to me and maybe to you too. Their 7" Christmas Party has 3 songs: "Christmas Party," "Fly Into the Mystery" and "Eggnog." "Christmas Party is an awesome song that goes between talking and actual song taking place as one reflects upon a swingin' Christmas Party. Enjoy!

The Boy Least Likely To Christmas Song

Everyone's favorite purveyors of cartoon animals, The Boy Least Likely To, have posted a Christmas song on their wesite called "Little Donkey." Nothing too special about the song, except for some of that trademark BLLT recorder sound. It basically tells the Christmas story through what it was like for the donkey involved.

Cute right? Yep.

But this was just part one of their Christmas gifts to fans. They also made a pin the tail on the donkey game to coincide with the song that you can play on your computer! How Exciting!

Secret Dakota Ring

Indie pop doesnt seem like it should be that hard to do yet there are so few bands out there that have it down perfect. So when i stumbled upon one that A.) I've never heard of before and B.) seems to know exactly how to make perfect indie pop, I was overly excited. Secret Dakota Ring is that band. Take notice because music like this doesn't come around all the time.

Secret Dakota Ring is, for the most part, the solo project of Brooklyn, NY multi-instrumentalist Andy Ross. His music is a mix of power-pop and straight up rock that echoes bands such as Beulah, Big Star, and [insert awesome indie-pop band name here]. Secret Dakota Rings website is fairly limited and basically just includes mp3s of every track on his debut full length, Do Not Leave Baggage All the Way, which is fantastic from beggining to end. The wesite also has this quote, which basically sums up everything about this band perfectly. "Secret Dakota Ring is pirate radio for rock lovers and crooked hearts, a pop broadcast on fractured frequencies of fuzzy harmony, trembling guitars, unassailable beats and bittersweet melodies in whisper and scream."

"My Window" in a bouncy song that starts out with fuzzy whispered vocals and breaks out the sunshine and turns itself into a shining pop gem that Miles Kurosky would be very proud of. This song could of been on Yoko and it would have been one of my favorites. "Beautiful Girl" is another highlight, moving along slowly with bells, acoustic guitar and violin and vocals that sound dangerously close to Brian Wilson. This your new favorite band.

Setlist:
Take These Hands and Throw Them in the River
American Motor Over Smoldered Field

God Bless Our Dead Marines
Ring Them Bells (freedom has come and gone)
The Triumph Of Our Tired Eyes

"Hump My Tunnel"

Today Stereogum posted a mash-up of the grandest kind. Mixing one of last year's best songs(The Arcade Fire's "Tunnels") with one of this year's worst songs(The Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps"). Now the fact that this was even made warrants some interest, but the reaction you'll see on your very own face when you hear the vocals come in will be priceless. Have a camera ready.

Spencer Krug's Other, Other Band signs to Absolutely Kosher

From Absolutely Kosher:
"We're extremely excited to welcome Montreal, Quebec's Sunset Rubdown to the label. Sunset Rubdown [which is largely the work of Spencer Krug] started as a solo project of home recordings (the album Snake's Got A Leg was released in June and a 5-song self-titled EP is due in January, both released by BC label Global Symphonic and available from our website). While Krug is still captain of the ship, the project has evolved into a full-fledged band effort. The group will record their new album in December at Montreal's Breakglass Studio. The as-yet-untitled effort will be released May 2 on Absolutely Kosher (and Global Symphonic in Canada), just in time for Sunset Rubdown to support Frog Eyes on a month-long national tour in May."

SONG OF THE DAY: "A Captive Audience"

If you've already heard this song before than you know how incredible it is. However, if you're like me and have never heard this song(let alone this band), you're in for a treat. I like being suprised by music and that's exactly what this song did for me, so in the interest of that belief I'm going to tell you close to nothing about this song except that this band has a way of making me believe every word they say. That, and they FULLY understand the concept of creshendo.

The Decemberists Sign to Capitol Records

It seems everyone's favorite jolly maritime musicians have grown up and gotten a bit too big for their Kill Rock Stars hot pants. Typically(i.e., Modest Mouse to Epic) I'd be worried but I have a decent amount of respect for Capitol Records. I mean, Radiohead have done some more-than-great things over there.

What does this all mean though? Well, in short, it is likely that The Decemberists will get a considerable amount of MTV airplay as well as much more radio airtime as well. And, just to put a cherry on the top of this dessert, here's hopin' for life size Colin Meloy cardboard cut-outs in Tower Records across the U.S.!

"...When asked what he thinks Capitol wants out of the Decemberists, Meloy replied, 'I have no idea! That's what's so winsome about them. Capitol bent over backwards for us, even knowing the kind of band that we are. We're not Franz Ferdinand. We're not making new wave Gang of Four music. We're kind of the opposite of that. We have this penchant for moldy, dusty 60s British folk music and songs about chimney sweeps.'" - Read more. (via Pitchfork)

The Sunshine Underground

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I just recently started reading Dreams of Horses on a regular basis and I'm glad I did. He alerted me to this awesome band. The Sunshine Underground are a pretty standard indie rock band from the UK. Except, like a lot of British indie popping up lately, they happen to not suck, and actually, they dont sound all that British to me. Think something along the lines of We Are Scientists, but with a different vocalist. As someone else said, listen to this, your winter happiness depends on it.

New Pink Mountains Album

The Pink Mountaintops are one of the countless side-project bands that Stephen McBean is involved in these days. Although The Pink Mountaintops truly are mostly a side project, I hate calling them that, because I just so happened to enjoy their last album much more than that of Stephen's other [much more hyped] band, Black Mountain(Those Vancouver folk sure do love mountains).

The new album from The Pink Mountaintops, Axis of Evol, is set to come out on February 7 for Valentine's Day, in both the CD and LP formats. Throughout the new full-length, Stephen McBean sings about love and war, the love of war, and the war of love. The new album, recorded largely at home, is even more lo-fi and fuzzed out than their debut, but from the impression this new song has given me, its very much for the better.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Recent Kill Rock Stars signees They Shoot Horses, Don't They? are one of the weirdest and most exciting bands I have heard in recent memory. This Vancouver septet is an art pop sensory overload complete with a 3 piece horn section, wild synths, and AIH-esque full band shouts. Is that enough to get you interested? How about this?

PopMatters says...
"It's not that often you come across a band that puts a shit-eating grin on your face so wide that you're able to swallow all the bullshit and lies and deceptions of the 21st century and still have room in your mouth for love and happiness and forgiveness. Yet that's exactly the kind of "root-a-toot", pie-faced smile you get when you listen to They Shoot Horses Don't They, a fresh-faced young band from Vancouver, BC. Plain and simple: This band is better than every other band on earth, even if you combined all the other bands on earth into one gigantic band -- this band would still be better than that band."

Their debut on Kill Rock Stars, Boo Hoo Hoo Boo, is scheduled for release on February 21st!

New Bound Stems Songs

Chicago's Bound Stems are one of my favorite bands right and their new EP The Logic of Building the Body Plan hasn't left my cd player since it came in the mail last week (yep, you heard right, I might just be the only blogger who doesnt have an iPod) .

I just cant get enough of these guys so I took a shot and emailed the band and asked if they had anything they could send my way. So, being the wonderful people they are, I got my hands on a couple tracks from the forthcoming full-length, which is now done according to the band. Though they're still looking for a label home for it, they expect it to be out some time later this coming year.

Sunday Wrap-Up

More Capstan Shafts

Ive been listening to The Sleeved and Grandaughters of the Blacklist by The Capstan Shafts all weekend and I now have a few new favorites. Being the generous soul I am, I've decided to share them with you.

[MP3]: The Capstan Shafts - Can't Climb A Tree (Without Breaking A Few Branches)
This is the most "Belle and Sebastian-y" song on the album. This is the second track and it's a good thing because I wasn't very interested in the first track. This one got me hooked.

[MP3]: The Capstan Shafts - Whatever, I'm A Miracle...
I like the song title a lot. I also happen to like the song a lot. Listen for the guitar that comes in at about 0:23, it's magnificent.

Again, buy the record at Abandoned Love Records (It's only $5!).

New Attorneys Demos

The Attorneys sent me a few brand spankin' new demo tracks over the weekend. Theyre a bit different than the song i posted last week, but I almost like them more. Anyway, definitely check em out and let me know what you think.

[MP3]: The Attorneys - Open Soul
This is my personal favorite. I really like the intro, it's sounds a lot like Joy Division and then after the intro it switches itself to something more along the lines of early Echo & the Bunnymen.

[MP3]: The Attorneys - Time to Fly
This song is all about the vocals, theyre amazing. The vocal harmony in the chorus is beautiful, it'll have you listening a second time for sure.

[MP3]: The Attorneys - Mash Note
Guitar delay solos, tupperware percussion, hand claps, shakers... what more could you ask for? If this goes on their album I think it should be the last song ;)

The Capstan Shafts = AWESOME

Here's what I know about The Capstan Shafts: It's a solo project of a man named Dean Wells, he makes lo-fi pop goodness, and he just released what is now one of my favorite albums of the year. The best way to describe his music would be to say that he was raised solely on Belle and Sebastian and Elephant 6 demos. That can be the only explanation for it, this is just too good.

His new "limited edition" release on Abandoned Love Records, The Sleeved and Grandaughters of the Blacklist, is nothing short of amazing. Im still excited because hearing this album made me feel the way I did when I first heard Dusk At Cubist Castle by The Olivia Tremor Control, now that's saying something.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this song and then hurry up and go buy the album from Abandoned Love Records. Again, it is a "limited edition" release so don't waste any time!

Wolf Parade EP #1

I thought for a while about posting this but I'm gonna go ahead and do it, for a couple reasons: One being the fact that it is looooong out of print. Two being that I think you guys would probably be very interested in this. So here it is. Keep in mind, this is a VERY rough EP. It's extremely lo-fi, but I think I almost like it more than the album versions. I feel like Wolf Parade is the kinda band that shouldn't sound any bit polished, I like 'em nice and fuzzy and heavy on the sythns. Enough talk, grab it up. I dont know how long I'll keep it up, but it's not going to be too long, so don't miss out.

Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha Remixes Stellastarr*

Apparently the Smashing Pumpkins' guitarist, James Iha, is a big Stellastarr* fan. Fan enough of course to remix one of the tracks from the new Stellastarr* album, Harmonies for the Haunted. I was really excited when I recieved this MP3 in an email today and while I think I still like the original a bit more, this is wonderfully done. But I knew it would be, I mean c'mon, it's James Iha and Stellastarr*. How could it not be awesome?

Also here is the video for "Sweet Troubled Soul," check it out.

BONUS!
[MP3]: Stellastarr* - Homeland
This is my favorite Stellastarr* song and it's from their debut self-titled album. A lot of people will say "Pulp Song" is the best song on the album, but I would have to disagree. It's that glistening plucked guitar floating over the whole song that gets me everytime.

P.S.
I got my hands on the first Wolf Parade EP. It's rough but it's still very good and it has a very different version of "Modern World" on it. If you guys want this, let me know and I'll put it up.
