Heavenly's Early Sarah Records Singles

Sarah 30, Sarah 41, and Sarah 51

Since there seemed to be a good amount of postive response from the Rocketship singles post, I thought it would be nice to start posting old indiepop gems more often for a few reasons. One being that I love the nostalgia of it. Two being that they're all out-of-print and this is the best way to spread the love!

As I've likely mentioned before, Heavenly is probably one of my top ten favorite bands of all time. For those not yet aquainted, Heavenly was Amelia Fletcher, Matthew Fletcher, Peter Momtchiloff, Robert Pursey, and later, Cathy Rogers. While retaining the fun and, at times, some of the "tweeness" of the previous outfit, Talulah Gosh, Heavenly displayed a tighter, mature sound, particularly in Amelia's love-song lyrics and Pete's guitar playing. Recording for Sarah Records, Heavenly's debut single in 1990 "I Fell In Love Last Night" was followed by "Our Love Is Heavenly" and next, "So Little Deserve," in 1991. Those first three singles are available for download below.

Heavenly I Fell In Love Last Night 7"
Sarah Records (Sarah030) 1990

1. [MP3]: I Fell In Love Last Night
2. [MP3]: Over And Over

Heavenly Our Love Is Heavenly 7"
Sarah Records (Sarah041) 1990

1. [MP3]: Our Love Is Heavenly
2. [MP3]: Wrap My Arms Around Him

Heavenly So Little Deserve 7"
Sarah Records (Sarah051) 1991

1. [MP3]: So Little Deserve
2. [MP3]: I'm Not Scared Of You

Heavenly, Tiger Trap, The Pastels, Beat Happening, Tullycraft and Cub make up the Royal Court of Twee. Great post!

thanks!

but you forgot the field mice and possibly the softies.

I think it's safe to say that there's no question about The Pastels, The Field Mice, Tullycraft, and Beat Happening. I'm not sure about including both Talulah Gosh and Heavenly, and both Tiger Trap and The Softies, but maybe? In both cases they were separate and very important bands. Cub is still a question mark for me. Do they deserve to be called Twee royalty?

Waw !!!
Discovered your blog very recently and find it brilliant ! And many thanks for this great Heavenly stuff !!!
Speaking of Amelia Fletcher, can't find the Tender Trap album in your best of 2006...This album is just fantastic and deserves the top of list !!
Cheers

I WOULD include Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Tiger Trap ,The Softies and even Cub. Each of those bands are royalty in my eyes. I would also suggest including The Lucksmiths. Tullycraft needs some help, all of those other bands are long gone.

Hey! Count 'em up! Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Tiger Trap, The Softies, Cub, The Pastels, The Field Mice, Tullycraft, Beat Happening, and The Lucksmiths. Has SKATTERBRAIN unscientifically nailed down the Top Ten Twee bands of all time?

Who can argue with a list like that?

that's a pretty solid list right there. i'd say lay down the cement.

although, i'm still not sure about cub.

Including Cub would also include Canada on the list of Countries represented.... that's something to think about. Here's how it stands now: Talulah Gosh (England), Tiger Trap / Softies (US),The Pastels (Scotland), The Field Mice (England), Tullycraft (US), Heavenly (England), Beat Happening (US), The Lucksmiths (Australia), and Cub (Canada)

hmm, okay, that's a good point. it's good to keep it rounded. cub stays!

i'm not sure about the inclusion of tiger trap. they only released one album and one ep. at least cub put out three full length albums, a few singles, and countless compilation tracks. rose melberg would still be represented with the softies. thoughts?

tiger trap are, however, in my opinion, far better than the softies. theyre difficult bands to compare i guess, but i'd pick tiger trap's energy over the softies lullabyes anyday. except for when im going to bed.

This has turned into quite the debate. I love it! Matt, you should think about "The Top Ten Twee Bands" as a possible Skatterbrain post. I'll bet there would be A LOT of comments if this topic were brought to the main page!

I agree. I think Tiger Trap had a bigger impact on the indie pop scene then The Softies did. I love The Softies, but if I had to choose one I would have to pick Tiger Trap.

That's not a bad idea Matt. Maybe my Cub girls will get more support in the public forum?

yknow guys i think i might just do that! it would pretty interesting, i think.

now, how should i do it...

maybe i could do it like, i'll make a list of like 20 or so bands... then, everyone votes for three. then, i'll tally them up. i guess to vote you can just post your three picks in the comments? i think that's how i'll do it unless anyone else has a better suggestion :)

If national diversity is a question here shouldn't we include some swedes? Perhaps the shermans? Eggstone?

Blogger Matt said...

i will run a nomination post first. where you can vote for, i dont know... 5 bands?

12:12 AM

The Shermans? I'm not sure they've had the same impact on the indie pop / twee scene as say... The Softies, Tullycraft, or The Lucksmiths. When were you thinking about putting up this nomination post Matt?

1:00 PM
Blogger Matt said...

hopefully soon, but i may not get to until next monday. yeah, okay, as of now, lets say it'll be up monday. since i dont post on weekends. so, yes, monday, ill put up a nomination post.

what shall we call this? Top Ten Most Important Twee Bands (as chosen by the people)!

i'm more than open to suggestions of better titles haha
