Vote For The Royal Court Of Twee!

Vote For The Royal Court of Twee!

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.

By fairly popular demand, here it is, the first step to deciding the by-no-means-official-but-fun-anyway Royal Court of Twee: The Nominations! Okay, so I thought about it a little bit and here's what I decided will happen. First, there will be The Nominations (this post), where in the comments, you will nominate a total of FIVE bands. These will obviously be your top five favorites and you can nominate any band you wish. I will let this go for probably a week, as to let enough nominations come in. Please tell lots of people to come and nominate and vote because a vote with no voters in no fun!

Next, I will tally up the nominations and will choose what will hopefully be something between 20 and 30 of the most highly nominated bands and those will be the bands you will ultimately voting from. The post following this post will be the VOTING post and I will let you know then how many bands you will be allowed to vote for at that time. Okay so, go make your nominations! Think your choices through and tell everyone you can to come and nominate/vote! Yay!

Umm, for reference, I think Nitsuh Abebe's "Twee As Fuck" article published by Pitchfork in 2005 is probably the best, most comprehensive piece ever written on the subject of twee.

*EDIT* Due to arguments in the comments concerning the legitimacy of the word "twee," I thought I'd mention this out here: I chose "twee" for the title because it sounded fitting. Feel free, however, to chose any jangle pop/indiepop/shambling bands of your liking, if that's what you would rather call them.

I nominate Andy as the Duke of Twee because he kinda looks like a duke! I nominate Herbie as the Wizard of Twee because I think he'd look good with a pointy hat and a big white beard! I nominate Pants Yell as the Prince of Twee because they're not quite mature enough to be the King yet! I nominate Tullycraft as the Jester of Twee because they make me laugh and dance and sing! I nominate you, Matt of Annapolis as the guy that has the scroll and goes HERE YE! HERE YE! because I just really want to hear you say those words!

1. Beat Happening started putting out music in 1983. They are arguably the most influential and important twee band of all time. They did it before anyone and made it ok to be twee.

2. Sarah Records might be the world's most famous twee label and Heavenly (along with the Field Mice) were their flagship band. They created the sound that most people associate with twee. Mathew Fletcher, the band's drummer and Amelia's brother, committed suicide prior to the band's final record being released. To my knowledge, he may be the only twee casualty.

3. If Tullycraft had only released the two anthems "Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend Is Too Stupid To know About" and "Twee" - they would still deserve to be on this list, but they have put out countless great singles and excellent albums. It seems like they have been around forever and yet they continue to stay fresh and keep twee alive.

4. The legacy The Field Mice managed to leave in their short three year career is nothing short of amazing. Over the years, since the band broke-up they've received significant critical praise and has given twee some much overdue credit.

5. Even though Tiger Trap only released one album and one EP the footprint they left was huge. Tiger Trap exemplified the new generation of twee in the early '90s. Rose Melbelg went on to be a major player in the indie music scene playing such bands as The Softies, Gaze, and Go Sailor.

Pants Yell! in the Royal Court of Twee? Let's be serious! They wouldn't even be invited to a party at the Castle! In two years I guarantee none of us will remember that band. Let's nominate bands that have actually had some sort of influence on Twee. Come on people! Pants Yell! don't belong anywhere near a list with bands like:

Talulah Gosh
The Pastels
The Softies
Tullycraft
Beat Happening

The 'top of the list' nominations for the Royal Court Of Twee are Heavenly, Beat Happening, Tullycraft and Tiger Trap. That has to be obvious to anyone who's been even partially awake for the past fifteen years.... but aren't we forgetting about The Lucksmiths?!

Can I cast a vote against Pants Yell? I agree with Dustin, they don't belong anywhere near a list like this. To include them would be insulting to the deserving bands and just make all of us look stupid.

The Essex Green, Minus the Bear, and Jenny Lewis are certainly not twee, and actually not very good. Why are you people plaguing us with these awful nominations? Is it that you don't know your history? Do you need Matt to explain to you what twee is? What would inspire you to nominate Beulah to the Royal Court of Twee? Are you simply ignorant?

Wasn't it determined that Pants Yell! was nominating themselves to be in the Royal Court of Twee? They obviously must think they're some important band or deserve some sort of recognition for something? For what I'm not exactly sure? Their impact on indiepop has been exactly 0%. They're a completely forgettable band.

Matt,
Twee is far too varied. The Field Mice, Beat Happening, The Wake, Tullycraft, Heavenly, The Softies, 14 Iced Bears, and The Sea Urchins are make different kinds of music that all falls under the Twee umbrella. You can't narrow Twee down to just 3 or 5 bands... I think 10 bands should make up the Royal Court. That might represent a better cross-section.

12:18 AM

yeah, the final "royal court" will be ten bands. but for the final voting you will be choosing FIVE bands to vote for. these are just the nominations right now for what the final voting ballot will be.

even though I really love the pants yell 7" and some of the tracks on the album are ace... but hey, they're not among the 5 top bands. but hey, who am I to judge?!?!?! and who are you to judge. snobs=) for myself, I have a hard time choosing anything! but here are bands that I have held higher than high (in no particular order):

1) Cats miaow, the
2) Smiths, the
3) Sundays, the
4) and the 4th and 5th spot go out to all the records occupying my space here... though per definition a lot of them, as for my nominees here and the others nominees, wouldn't really count as "twee".

6:28 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

so with that said, why not rename it since some of the bands that get most votes won't be twee. why not "the royal court of pop" (or indie...)?

oh, now I remembered a fatal mistake!!! (this is what happens when I have to choose hehe...)

I nominate:

They Go Boom!!

What on earth is twee about the Bats or the Wedding Present - am I being dozey? I'm 38 and my teenage years were spent listening to bands like this. I can't stand to here my favourite bands being denegrated like this. Dave Gedge'd be chocking on his pint!Twee! I preferred 'cutie' or 'shambling'. By the way the Soup Dragons first album sounds like the bloody Sonics compared to Heavenly. God it's all so middle-class! And Felt aren't twee either. They're a POP group. So says Lawrence!Dictionary definitions of music. I don't know. How can you all be so bloody subjective! Etc Pip

pip,
i don't know if you able to notice, but this is all in FUN. no where did i say this was the end all objective, best twee bands ever. twee means something slightly different to anyone who knows about it. if someone wants to look at felt as twee, then so be it. this list is going to 100% completely subjective and that's, i think, why it's gonna be interesting.

I agree the 'twee' tag is misleading. Most of the bands listed aren't 'twee' (thank god)...

Whenever I hear twee I just substitute 'jangly pop' and then my cognitive dissonance melts away.

To be quite honest, I've never been able to determine what the hell twee is, and what indie is, and all that rubish. So, I just went with what I liked, I figure that works best.

1. Beirut
2. Matt Pond PA
3. Virginia Coalition
4. Acid House Kings
5. Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins

Lastly, I'd like to conclude by saying, I know people will look at these and be like....hey that's not twee, or that's not whatever. And I just feel like people keep looking at what others posted and then deciding what to post based on the views of others. So whether you like these picks or not doesn't matter, because they are simply my picks. With no influence from the other billion posts.
