Aberdeen: Byron 7"

"Byron" (sarah093)

I think a week or so ago someone said something along the lines of "Do Aberdeen next!" in the comments of the "You Should All be Murdered" post, and well, I know it wasn't exactly next, but here's my absolute favorite Aberdeen single. Byron was released in 1994 and was the band's first single on Sarah Records, and well, ever. All three tracks on the single are great, but there's no argument really that A-side "Byron" is the definite highlight.

In my opinion, "Byron" the best song the band ever wrote. It opens with a faint synth before drums and tambourine come in, but the song doesn't really get going until the beautiful guitar enters. The way the delayed guitar picking plays off the twinkling piano/keyboard, and vice versa, is just mesmerizing (and wildly dancable). Also worth noting is lead singer Beth Arzy's voice, as it is probably the band's best instrument, floating breathlessly over the music, turning into more of a dream than a song. Anyway, if you like Aberdeen then you'll love this (if you don't already have it), but if this is new to you then I hope you give it a listen and love it as much as I do! More info on Aberdeen can be found at Tweenet. Like always, please feel free to leave any requests in the comments.

I'm staking a post here, Matt, just to say, your site has literally been one of the finest online discoveries I've ever... discovered online.

Really, for people who love music, what can be better than finding music you didn't even know you loved. It's a high that never gets old, and what's more, in many cases here, I may well never even known about otherwise.

An uncomfortably sincere thank you.

Aberdeen were one of my favorite additions in the Sarah Records roster.

There is so much good music on Sarah Records; I'd recommend putting up, at some point, one of their compilations for those who are pretty unfamiliar with Sarah. Specifically "Air Balloon Road," as that is what I first heard, and what convinced me that Sarah Records were worth spending a lot of time researching and listening to.

i was thinking about putting up either glass arcade or air balloon road, however, there and back again lane is probably actually the best introduction.

Hey twee-bee..it seems like a lot of your readers would enjoy something from the Sea Urchins, like the Sarah Stardust EP or summat like dat. It's very spring-y.

This is a fantastic single. The most expensive one I've got myself, but I haven't been bothered to digitalize it, so great stuff mister!
