The Ruling Class

The Ruling Class!

Since they first appeared in my life only a week or two ago, I've quickly realized how much I love The Ruling Class. Their debut EP+7" Tour De Force is out right now on Shelflife Records, who have seemed to being nothing but spot-on since their rebirth last year. The EP is full of glistening and jangly, sometimes shoegazey songs that wouldn't have felt the least bit out of place between Ride or Slowdive in 1991. I'm currently totally obsessed with "Sleeping Beauty" – track one on the EP portion of Tour De Force. The ringing, twinkly guitars and fast paced drumming make me feel like I'm listening to some long lost track that should have appeared on Ride's Nowhere LP. Other highlights include the Field Micesque "Umbrella Folds," which appears on the 7" and EP closer "Marian Shrine" which couldn't be more 90s Manchester if it tried. Have a listen to "Sleeping Beauty" though, you won't regret it, assure you.

Order Tour De Force from Shelflife now! NOW! Not only is it a great record, but if you haven't yet experienced one, the packaging on all of the shelflife stuff is imressively impressive and a joy to hold in your hands :)

My Feelings Are Hurt So Easily...

QUICK URGENT EXTREMELY IMPORTANT NEWS! Go over The Airfields' MySpace page immediately and listen to their freshly recorded cover of The Field Mice's "Sensitive." I feel like the Airfields were kind of made to cover this song and it turned out so so perfect! I can't wait to see them play it live sometime – it'll be the closest I'll ever get to seeing The Field Mice.

I Love You More Cause I'm Bigger

A new mix, finally!

It's been a while since I made a new mix for the blog, so I spent a good part of yesterday putting this new one together. I'm quite in love listening to it over and over, so I hope some others will be, too! You may notice by the tracklist, but the mix is sort of split into two sides – tracks one through seven being somewhat softer, more concise jangly pop songs and then the volume and noise goes up a bit for the remainder, ending on what is probably the best song the Lilys ever wrote. Some highlights, in my opinion at least, would be the fantastic version of "Climb My Stairs" by the greatest band ever, The Cat's Miaow... just wait for the organ to come in near the end-ish!! The Cannanes track is also kind of amazing, as are all the other Bart-related projects and Boyracer's brilliant Even As We Speak cover.

DOWNLOAD IT! As always, this mix is lovingly tagged as a compilation, complete with the cover art seen just up above.

The Alligators: "I'm Dungeons You're Dragons"

The Alligators!

I haven't done any MySpace browsing in a while, but it proved to be wildly successful today – as usual – when I came upon The Alligators! The come from Provo, Utah and make super dancey and super catchy pop songs with awesome shouty full-band vocal harmonies. The first song I listened to, "I'm Dungeons You're Dragons," has been pretty much locked in my head since the first second I heard it. The sythn and the guitars work together so well, winding in and out of each other all the way through the song. The ridiculously catchy chorus ain't too bad either...

I think I'm going fucking crazy, I'm surrounded by parasites

Sheffield indiepop trio Slow Down Tallahassee are finally releasing their debut record on May 26th! It's called The Beautiful Light and it'll be released by Thee SPC.

It's going to be amazing and it celebration of it's amazingness, Thee SPC are offering a FREE download-only "Virtual Vinyl" single of the record's excellent title track b/w a beautiful new song called "Limbs." "The Beautiful Light" has been stuck in my head since the very first time I heard it and I can't decide what I love more – the awesome halloween-y synths or when they oh so passionately sing the lines:

I think I might go suicidin'
I'm sick and tired of fucking hidin'
Memories are getting hazy
I think I'm going fucking crazy!

You can download the tracks below or head over to Thee SPC and grab em both.

Makeout Party at Werewolf Club! and News!

At long last, Philadelphia's Scary Monster have finished their first record! After listening to "Hot Chocolate Girl" and "True Love Good Morning" for the past six months it's nice to know I won't have to spend all day listening to them on MySpace anymore. The new record, awesomely titled Makeout Party at Werewolf Club is available for only $6ppd in USA or $5 in person from the band! You can visit them on MySpace or email them at Scarymonsterphilly at gmail.com for more info and how to get your hands on the CD!

[MP3]: Scary Monster :: True Love Good Morning (Yay! yay! yay!)

If you really wanna save a dollar, they'll be playing a few Philly shows in the next couple months that you should really not miss at all.

May 30th 10:00pm at Tritone in Philadelphia
June 14th 6:30pm at the Barbery in Philadelphia (all ages with Tullycraft!)

ALSO! That news I promised...
I've tried to keep it secret for a while, but I figure it's about time to let the cat out of the bag! I'm releasing a compilation CD-R! I'll post the tracklist some time next week perhaps, but it's better than I could have ever hoped! For now, here's a quick photo of the sleeves – freshly screenprinted – I just finished all 150 of them yesterday! I'm so excited, I hope some of you are, too!

The Garlands EP!

I'm back! Hopefully! I've still got a little bit of the semester left, but I really miss posting and so I'm going to do my best to get back into the regular swing of things around here! As I've clearly mentioned before, I LOVE The Garlands. For those just now being introduced (and shame on you!), The Garlands are Roger Gunnarsson and Christin Wolderth – an indiepop match made in heaven – much like any other band Roger's ever been in. As expected, their debut EP is full of super sweet vocals and gloriously jangling melodies. My favorite of all, "David," might be one of the best pop songs I've heard all year and will bring more than a smile to anyone who, like me, has been desperately clinging onto their small batch of old Free Loan songs, hoping that one day they'd feel that same way again. Like I said, totally in love.

[MP3]: The Garlands :: David (Hiiiiiiiighly Recommended!)

The EP is out on both Cosy Recordings and Cloudberry Records, so I mean, you could buy two if you wanted or you just buy one from one place I guess. In other sort of unrelated news, I have some very exciting news to share with you guys in a day-ish or so... but it's really great I swear!
